FSA News re Salt

The Food Standards Agency has launched a new phase of its salt campaign, urging consumers to check the salt content of foods and choose options lower in salt. The FSA recommends that the maximum amount on salt should be no more than 6 grams a day. This is sensible advice, but how can consumers add up all the salt they eat...? Read on to find out!

MyNutmeg

So what’s new? Well, Nutmeg has just launched MyNutmeg a new program which checks daily levels of salt, fat, saturated fat, sugar, fibre, protein, carbohydrates and calories in users’ diets. MyNutmeg also measures your intake against daily recommended amounts and even makes recommendations for alternatives if your diet is not balanced.

You can plan daily or weekly menus or can just input what you’ve eaten and MyNutmeg will do the rest for you.

MyNutmeg is programmed to calculate your needs based on your height, weight and physical activity. You can aim to lose, gain or maintain weight and the program adjusts your requirements.

MyNutmeg is an easy-to-use web based program which will be free to trial. It contains a database of over 3,000 different foods including pre-prepared foods available from supermarkets, which are analysed and graded using the FSA’s ‘traffic light’ colour codes. And early testing of MyNutmeg has shown that most of us don’t realise how much saturated fat, salt and sugar are in the ready–made meals and sandwiches we buy regularly.
